Trust is the cement that holds society together. It is the basis for social cohesion and cooperation. Trust in science is crucial for dealing with issues like climate change. Yet, trust can be undermined by disinformation campaigns, with devastating results. Should we trust our researchers, newspapers, social media channels? And what difference will AI and big data make?

Leah Henderson is a professor of philosophy of science and epistemology in the Faculty of Philosophy in Groningen. She holds an endowed chair in Societal Trust from the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW) and the Agricola school of the University of Groningen.
Jan-Willem Romeijn is professor of philosophy of science in the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen. His current research is concerned with the collective nature and social organization of science and the introduction of machine learning and data science methods in the sciences, in particular in psychopathology.
